Abstract

Terminalia chebula (T. chebula) is a flowering evergreen tree of the family Combretaceae. It has several common names such as black myrobalan, ink tree, or chebulic myrobalan (English), haritaki (Sanskrit and Bengali), harad (Hindi), harada (Marathi and Gujrati) Karkchettu (Telgu) and Kadukkaya (Tamil). In Tibet, T. chebula is called as the “King of Medicine. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the standardization of purification of Terminalia chebula fruit as per siddha text references. OBJECTIVES: To standardized the purification process of dry fruit of Terminalia chebula in two methods. As per PLIM guideline and to develop the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for purification of dry fruit of Terminalia chebula. To study the physic-chemical properties of dry fruit of Terminalia chebula before and after purification and compare these two methods. MATERIALS & METHODS: Research type: analytical research, Research period: 24 months, Work plan: Text reference of research raw material got from; “sarakku suddhi muraigal” text book published by department of Indian medicine and homoeopathy, Chennai and “marunthu sei iyalum kalayum” published by; department of Indian medicine and homoeopathy, Chennai mentioned as; removal of seed is purification of the dry fruit of Terminalia chebula Retz. Procurement and authentication of raw drugs from registered Rajendra herbal distributers, Thuckalai from Kanyakumari district for this research. Preparation of research raw material as powdered two samples for comparative study. Biological and pesticide residue screening of the both samples of Terminalia chebula Retz. As satisfied PLIM guideline and sterile drug for human consumption purposes. Characterization of drug by the testing of Physicochemical analysis, Biochemical analysis, Phyto chemical analysis, Electrochemical analysis such as; ICP-OES, TLC and HPTLC. Standardization of raw material by siddha aspect as PLIM such as; Raw Plant Material Test Parameters; Description, Adulteration / Substitution in literature, Foreign Matter, Organoleptic characters (colour, odour, taste and texture), Macroscopic & Microscopic Characters, Powder Microscopy, pH (10% aqueous extract), Loss on drying at 1050C /Moisture content, Total ash, Acid-insoluble ash, Water- soluble extractive, Alcohol- soluble extractive, Volatile oil, Assay for element (s) (if available), TLC/HPTLC/GLC/HPLC (As per requirement), Assay from active constituents, Test for heavy / toxic metals, Pesticide residue, Microbial contamination, Test for specific pathogen, Aflatoxins, Self-life. CONCLUSION: The Present study is an attempt to establish the scientific basis for the purification of Terminalia chebula Retz. The Aim of the purification is to minimalize the poisonous consequence of the drug and improve the potency and safety of a drug. These results are strongly established the effectiveness of Siddha purification. Hence it can be decided that the concept of detoxification procedure as mentioned in Siddha text provides current evidence with a good scientific contextual. These searches will definitely assistance to established a standard procedure for purification of Terminalia chebula Retz. Purified sample has very good medicinal value than the un-purified sample (with seed powder sample). Finally concluded as, seed removal dry pulp of Terminalia chebula is very good medicinal remedy for single or poly herbal formulation in herbal medicines respectively.
