Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The determination of the individuality of a person is called Identification. In other term it is defined as recognition of that person or dead body based on certain physical characters unique to that individual. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. To study the pattern of death in unclaimed dead bodies in Government Stanley Medical College mortuary during the period from January to December 2019. 2. To estimate various factors used in establishment of identity in unclaimed dead bodies. 3. To evaluate the various issues faced by investigating officers, forensic experts inpar with the unclaimed dead bodies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was undertaken for a period of one year from January 2019 to December 2019 in Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai. RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS: Out of 100 unclaimed dead bodies studied 90 were males and 10 were females. The most common age group in the unclaimed dead bodies were in the age group of 51 – 60 years (30%). Among the natural cause of death most common was chronic lung disease (28 cases), among the unnatural cause of death most common was multiple injuries (26 cases). The most common manner of death was natural (61 cases). CONCLUSION: Prompt and better identification methods along with coordinate efforts of the law enforcing agencies would help in establishing the identity of unclaimed dead bodies.
