Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was done to compare the shear and tensile bond strength between laser structured bracket base and mesh base brackets using nano bonding agents. METHOD: 120 sound human adolescent premolars extracted for orthodontic purpose were collected, the teeth were cleared of soft tissue debris and blood and immediately stored in distilled water which was changed weekly to avoid bacterial growth. The teeth were randomly devided into 4 groups with 30 specimens in each group. The teeth were mounted on acrylic blocks for testing shear and tensile bond strength. The mesh base and laser etched brackets were bonded using self-etching nano bonding agents. The shear and tensile bond strength of laser etched brackets and mesh base brackets were evaluated using zwick testing machine with cross head speed of 5mm/min. RESULTS: The mean value of shear bond strength of laser etched brackets was 7.44 MPa and mesh base brackets was 5.28 MPa., and the mean value of tensile bond strength of laser etched brackets was 12.31 MPa and mesh base brackets was 8.17 MPa respectively. The laser etched brackets showed a superior shear and tensile bond strength when compared to mesh base brackets, and the mean values between laser etched and mesh base brackets were statistically significant ( P< 0.05). CONCLUSION: The laser etched bracket base showed a superior shear and tensile bond strength when compared to mesh base brackets. The nano filler particles incorporated in the bonding agents can enhance resin monomer penetration, better marginal integrity and improve bond strength. Thus, in order to overcome the drawbacks of seventh generation self-etching primers of decreased bond strength, the laser etched bracket base with its better mechanical interlocking and nano technology in bonding agents can enhance the bond strength of self-etching primers. This can be used in situations were higher bond strength are needed in orthodontic treatment.
