Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are musculoskeletal disorders affecting the temporomandibular joints and its associated structures with the primary symptom being pain. Pain which is a subjective feeling, is considered as the fifth vital sign. Analyzing the pain intensity associated with TMD using pain assessment tools is necessary to provide proper diagnostic aids, management. This study was conducted among South Indian Populations, in patient with TMD pain and the pain intensity were assessed using Brief pain inventory and Mc Gill pain questionnaire’s. AIMS & OBJECTIVE: To compare the Brief Pain Inventory and Mc Gill Pain Questionnaire in assessing the patients with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and to see if these assessment tools can be used effectively in this population MATERIALS AND METHODS: 100 patients presenting with signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders were included in this study after thorough clinical examination was performed. The patient with TMD was made to answer the two questionnaires Brief Pain Inventory and Mc Gill Pain Questionnaire which was translated into Tamil language for the subjects to understand them easily. A thorough TMJ clinical examination was made in patient with TMD pain. The subjects with TMD pain was made to answer the two sets of questionnaire Brief Pain Inventory which has 32 questions and Mc Gill Pain Questionnaire with 72 verbal questions and had compared the ability of the patient to answer the two sets of questionnaire. The answers given by the patient was collected and analyzed. RESULTS: When assessing the 100 patient with TMD individually, using brief pain questionnaire, we could able to address the detailed history of the disorder and the main disadvantage we found among 100 patients by using Mc Gill pain questionnaire is, there is a lack of understanding the different type of pain characteristic, since it has many terms of pain characteristic. On comparing both the Tamil versioned questionnaire based on patient perspective, the brief pain questionnaire was comparatively useful among our populations. CONCLUSION: TMD pain which is more common among many individuals especially in women and it is a major concern in many populations, associated with interference in regular activities such as sleep disturbance, physical and mental status of the patient. Many assessment tools have been introduced to measure the intensity of the pain and to relieve the subjective feeling by providing them with proper management. Here I have concluded that Brief pain inventory, though it is more time consuming method, to assess the patient, it is found to be useful among our population than Mc Gill pain questionnaire.
