Abstract

AIM OF THE STUDY: To correlate the pharyngeal airway sub regions with the positioning of the hyoid bone in lateral cephalometric. OBJECTIVES: 1. To compare the position of the hyoid bone at different levels of pharynx .i.e., nasopharynx, oropharynx and hypopharynx. 2. Comparison is done by using various lateral cephalometric variables that define the position of hyoid bone. 3. Applying the outcome in elaborating the role of lateral Cephalometrics in determining the position of hyoid bone for diagnosing orthodontic patients. 4. The position of hyoid bone tells about the developing malocclusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 30 lateral cephalograms were collected of 15 males and 15 females of good quality without any errors and distortion, from the oral radiology department of ragas dental college. The various cephalometric variables like C3-RGn, C3-H, H-RGn, H-H”, HP angle, A-PNS, dhoriz-H. dvert-H, PH-BaN and HPPP which designated the position of hyoid bone were correlated at various levels of upper airway space. RESULTS: The results of this study shows that these parameters used to measure the position of hyoid bone showed a highly significant correlation with the sub regions of the upper pharynx likely, the nasopharynx, oropharynx and the hypopharynx respectively. CONCLUSION: These reliable cephalometric parameters can be used in the orthodontic diagnosis of malocclusions even during the post treatment phase to avoid the relapse of the treatment.
