Abstract

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: 1. To estimate the salivary levels of sialic acid in patients with OSCC and oral premalignancy and to compare it with healthy controls. 2. To correlate the salivary sialic acid levels between various histopathological grades of OSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total of 60 subjects were included in the study. They are divided into 3 Groups. Group I consist of 20 patients with clinically and histologically proven OSCC, Group II consist of 20 patients with clinically and histologically proven oral potentially malignant disorders and Group III consist of 20 healthy subjects. Salivary samples were collected from all the 3 groups and were subjected to sialic acid estimation by using sialic acid Elisa kit. RESULTS: The result shows that there is significance difference among the OSCC patients, PMD patients and control group with regards to salivary sialic acid levels with p value of 0.000 which is highly significant. There is also statistically significance difference in the salivary sialic acid levels between WDSCC and PDSCC and between MDSCC and PDSCC with a p value of 0.000. There is no statistically significant difference between WDSCC and MDSCC with a p value of 0.098 which is greater than 0.05. CONCLUSION: So, the present study states that salivary sialic acid levels serve as a non-invasive screening tool (tumour marker) for oral cancer. It can be also used to assess the various histopathological grading of oral cancer and more importantly to predict the disease outcome and response to therapy.
