Abstract

AIM OF THE STUDY: To study the perception of orthodontist, general dentists and laypersons for digital alteration of profile modification in a male and female subject with class II division 1 malocclusion. METHODS: The pretreatment profile image of the male and female subject was digitally altered to simulate profile images that can be achieved by camouflage treatment by increasing nasolabial angle and mandibular advancement surgery using chin-neck length. The images were presented to orthodontists, general dentists, and lay persons with a questionnaire to evaluate the best profile image based on their perception by scoring each image using visual analog scale. RESULTS The untreated profile was judged to be least attractive. The most acceptable nasolabial angle for a male subject was 93˚. There was a diverged opinion among the judges in predicting nasolabial angle of the female subject. The most favorable chin-neck length was 45mm for a male subject and 54mm for a female subject. CONCLUSION: All three groups of people considered favorable profile improvement that simulates surgical advancement of the mandible.
