Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the accuracy of slot dimensions, tip and torque values of ten commercially available metal brackets using scanning electron microscope & comparing with the standard values prescribed by MBT. MATERIALS & METHODS: Five Maxillary right central incisor brackets of 0.022 inch slot from 10 different companies and were taken and categorized into ten groups. Frontal and lateral view of all the brackets were scanned using scanning electron microscope under the magnification of 50x & 75x & the images were captured. Using Nano Xflash Detector Edax (point scan, area scan, line scan) software reference lines were constructed on the lateral view images to determine the slot height at entry, middle and base, slot depth at top and bottom and torque. Tip value was determined by constructing lines on the frontal image. These values were tabulated and compared to the standard M.B.T prescribed values. RESULT: Results of the study showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the measured value and the standard value of all 10 groups of bracket (p≤0.05). It was found that Group VII brackets had values nearest to the standard. Group I and II showed maximum variation from standard value. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that all the brackets involved in the study showed significant variation from the standard values. Group VII showed the least and Group I and II showed the most difference.
