Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Presbyopia is another common cause of visual impairment, mainly among persons above 30 years of age. Presbyopia is a condition that mainly affects the near vision of the individual due to age related loss of accommodation. It is also one of the common reasons for spectacle use among adults. Like refractive error, presbyopia can also be easily corrected by a simple eye test and economical spectacle correction and therefore should not remain undetected and untreated. OBJECTIVES: 1. To determine prevalence of uncorrected presbyopia and spectacle coverage. 2. Distribution of ocular morbidity in the study population. 3. To determine functional status of patients with presbyopia, determine the levels of near vision at which difficulty sets in and identify the barriers associated with not using spectacles. METHODS: This was a population based cross sectional study. The study was conducted in a randomly selected village in Kanayambadi block under the Community Health and Developmental program of our hospital. All consenting individuals above 30 years of age in the selected village were included in the study. The Health Aids were given a list of eligible individuals who were contacted to attend the study clinic. This was followed by vision assessment, and ocular examination. A questionnaire based survey to assess the functional need assessment and quality of life was administered by a trained social worker. RESULTS: The prevalence of presbyopia was 51.3% (CI 46.3 – 55.7 %). The mean age was 52.34 (SD 9.452), the minimum age being 35 years. The unmet presbyopic need was 75.8%, met presbyopic need 19.5% and presbyopic spectacle coverage was 20.5%. The most common barrier to spectacle use was ‘lack of felt need’. Presbyopes report increase difficulty in performing near vision tasks like threading a needle (P = 0.000), reading (P=0.00), seeing small objects in food (P = 0.010), cleaning hair of children (P=0.000), cooking (0.010). Most of the individuals reported difficulty when vision was worse than N12 for most of the activities.
