Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Fracture both bone forearm in adults is commonly managed with ORIF with plate osteosynthesis.TITANIUM ELASTIC NAILING (TENS) is a viable alternative for diaphyseal fractures of both bone forearm in adults. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the functional and radiological outcome of fracture both bone forearm treated with TENS nailing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In Stanley Medical College 42 patients with closed fracture of both bone forearm were treated with intramedullary nailing using TENS. communited and compound fractures were excluded. post op immobilisation using above elbow slab for three weeks was done. Patient’s were followed up with radiographs and clinical evaluation (Grace-Eversman criteria and DASH questionnaire). Range of movements and time of union were evaluated. RESULTS: With mean follow up of 14 months, average time of union was 11 weeks. According to Grace-Eversman criteria, results were excellent in 29, goodin 9, acceptable in 3 and unacceptable in 1. average DASH score was 14(5-36). Average forearm supination was 70 degrees (65 to 75 degrees) and pronation 65 degree (60 t0 70 degree). None had restriction for flexion or extension. One patient went for non union for whom ORIF with Plating was done. CONCLUSION: CRIF with TENS nail of adequate size for fracture both bone forearm in adults is a good alternative method of fixation with advantages of minimal soft tissue damage and least neurovascular injury risks and cosmetically superior, especially for middle third diaphyseal fractures of forearm in adults.
