Abstract

INTRODUCTION: One of the most significant complications of diabetes is foot disease, which often leads to amputation, very common in developing countries like India, the diabetic capital of the world. AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyse the predictive factors for major lower extremity amputation in diabetic foot patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a predictive observational study which was carried out in 100 patients admitted with diabetic foot in Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital, Thanjavur for a period of 12 months. RESULTS: Out of 100 patients, among which 27 went for major lower extremity amputation and 16 went for minor lower extremity amputation. Presence of gangrene, pulse status, duration of diabetes, Wagner’s grading, total WBC count and soft tissue infection were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: From the study, presence of gangrene, pulse status, duration of Diabetes, Wagner’s grading, total WBC count and soft tissue infection were the predictive factors for major lower extremity amputation in diabetic foot patients. These predictive factors will help clinicians to identify patients at high risk of lower extremity amputation.
