Abstract

Wounds can cause painful lengthy hospital stay, multiple stages of surgeries, and enormous financial burden. Collagen granule dressing has better advantage over conventional antibiotic dressing in terms of collagen formation with greater reduction in inflammatory cells during healing days resulting in decreased days of healing, whereas conventional antibiotic dressing has minimal collagen formation, high grade of inflammation during the healing days with maximum exudates formation resulting in increased days of healing. A collagen granule dressing has another advantage over conventional dressing in terms of non- immunogenic, non- pyrogenic, being natural, easy application, hypo allergic and pain free. Aim of the study is to investigate the effect of antibiotic coated collagen granules dressing vs conventional antibiotic dressing in the chronic ulcer patients in terms of duration of hospital stay, wound surface area and the duration of SSG application. A prospective study was done between May 2018 To May 2019 in which 60 patients who presented with chronic ulcers where chosen by random sampling technique and were grouped into two groups consisting of 25 patients. After a thorough wound debridement collagen granules dressing applied and the dressing kept intact for 2 days and opened after that. Wound assessed for surface area and number of dressings required before providing skin cover for that patient. All the patients were assessed for the duration of stay, quality of life and wound surface area and found to have significant difference favouring patients with collagen granules dressing in wound healing (p value < 0.001). Collagen granules dressing showed faster and better healing rates among the study group.
