Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of acute intestinal obstruction can be one of the most challenging tasks faced by general surgeons. This study was conducted to study the management of Acute Intestinal obstruction and its outcome in Adults in Govt. Rajaji hospital, Madurai. A prospective cross sectional study of All the cases diagnosed as Acute intestinal obstruction and admitted to various surgical wards in GOVT RAJAJI HOSPITAL , MADURAI from May 2018 to May 2019, and managed surgically have been studied. A total of 75 patients were diagnosed as Acute Intestinal Obstruction and managed surgically out of 954 patients operated in Emergency during the study period which equates as 7% of patients requiring Emergency surgery are a case of Acute Intestinal Obstruction. Adhesions 23 (30%) was the leading cause of obstructions followed by Hernia 15 (20%), and Malignant Obstruction 15(20%). Surgical intervention was carried depending upon the Aetiology. Morbidity consisted mainly of Surgical site Infection, some of which resulted in Secondary suturing, sepsis and RTI (45%) patients. The overall mortality rate was 12 (14%).Acute Intestinal Obstruction, is a common surgical problem, which accounts for a large percentage of surgical admission for acute abdomen. Adhesions still remain as one of the commonest causes for acute intestinal Obstruction .Though X ray is a valuable modality; Computed Tomography is increasingly becoming the “goto” imaging modality to identify the source of obstruction. Open Exploratory Laparotomy is the gold standard in treating unresolved intestinal obstruction, but laparoscopy should be considered in a selective group
