Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The human intervertebral disc is a fibrocartilage disc between the sheets of hyaline cartilage (vertebral end plates). They help to form the joints between the vertebral bodies, which belongs to symphysis variety. Three types of tissues compose the intervertebral discs. The annulus fibrosus, nucleus pulposus, and vertebral endplates. AIM OF THE STUDY: To demonstrate the Morphometric measurements are important clinically for the operating surgeon and useful for designing of artificial implants for disc replacement surgeries and to study the histological changes of degenerated disc with normal disc. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 50 X-rays of lumbosacral spine with equal proportion of male and female with inclusion and exclusion criteria’s applied are taken up for morphometric measurements herniated disc from post-mortem cases and herniated disc are been received from operated cases. RESULTS: Results obtained from the morphometric study shows that the disc height and other index almost similar when compared to the study in various Indian population and not much variation present among genders. Histologically findings like derangement of collagen pattern, neovascularization, proliferation of chondrocytes and changes in ground substance were been observed. CONCLUSION: Observations of this study may be useful for designing of artificial disc which is specific for south Indian population.
