Abstract

BACK GROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that affects individuals across various social, ethnic and geographical groups. Since there are only few studies estimating the prevalence of ASD on India, we aimed at determining the prevalence of ASD in Indian population. OBJECTIVES: 1. To study the prevalence of ASD in children. 2. To study the socio-demographic and related factors associated with ASD in the study population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional observational study in children aged 2 to 5 years attending 44 out of 177 anganwadi centres selected through simple stratified random sampling in Maduranthakam block of Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu. After obtaining informed consent, socio-demographic data was collected using a semi-structured proforma and M-CHAT-R was administrated. The data were entered in MS-Excel and analysed using SPSS 20 version. RESULTS: The prevalence of ASD was 0.6 % (5/773). The prevalence of ASD was 0.9% (4/401) in boys and 0.2% (1/372) in girls among the participants. The sex-ratio was 4:1as males show higher prevalence than females. CONCLUSION: The scarcity of standardised, large population based epidemiological studies of ASD in India highlights an urgent need to study the burden of ASD in India. Our study not only helped to estimate the prevalence of ASD but it paved the way for development of appropriate Government policies and provided a framework for future research.
