Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The ACO diagnosis has been to include patients with diagnosis of COPD by Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease criteria and asthma defined by subject report of a physician diagnosis of asthma before the age of 40 years. Alternatively, it includes patients who meet criteria for COPD and who also have typical features of asthma, positive bronchodilator response on spirometry. AIM OF THE STUDY: To study the prevalence of Asthma COPD overlap among COPD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted among 124 COPD patients in 6 months and labelled as ACO based on international journal of pulmonary and respiratory medicine, there are major and minor criteria. Based on major and minor criteria ACO has been diagnosed. RESULTS: Out of 124 patients with COPD who were included in the study, 25 cases found to be with asthma copd overlap, with a prevalence of about 20%. CONCLUSION: It is important to recognize this entity, as patients suffering from an asthma-COPD overlap are more symptomatic, have a poorer quality of life and suffer more exacerbations than patients with asthma or COPD alone,it appears wise to prescribe inhaled corticosteroids early in the course of the disease, considering their established efficacy in asthma.
