Abstract
The determination of sex and estimation of age at death from human skeleton remains is very essential in the field of forensic anthropology for the identification. Few studies about sex determination using patellar measurements, and one study about estimation of age of death have already been published with accuracy rate of approximately 85%. However all these studies are done in different regions of the globe among different population. In this study, 210 (104 males and 106 females) left patella bone from south Indian cases subjected to medico-legal autopsy at the mortuary of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital attached to Madras Medical College, Chennai. The objective of this study is to determine sex and estimate the age at death and sex determination using morpho-metric datas and applying discriminant function analysis. Recently sex determination using discriminant function analysis has gained lot of recognition. This discriminant function carried out by statistical analysis will be the future for sex determination which needs basic data of this bone from their own population. However the age estimation by patella is not superior or reliable as that by the analysis of pubic symphisis or cranial sutures. The age at death using patellar morphology is accurate by 89%; however It can be said that age estimation is rather vague; therefore its use is to be limited for rough estimation of age at death as young (score 0), middle age (score 1) and old age (score 2 and 3).
