Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Thrombocytopenia is a condition with decreased platelet count. It affects both men and women equally. The aetiology can be due to conditions like febrile illnesses like dengue fever, malaria and other infectious cause. Hence the study on platelet parameters helps to rule out the cause for thrombocytopenia and treat accordingly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: •A total of 85 cases of Males and females of age group 18-65 years with suspected thrombocytopenia with acute febrile infections were studied. Blood was collected in EDTA tube and analysed for thrombocytopenia. Mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width was studied using automated cell analysers. •MPV and PDW parameters were studied from day 1 to day 3 and thrombocytopenia was graded into mild, moderate and severe cases. •Peripheral smear was done in all the 85 cases to exclude pseudo thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia with acute febrile illness was sub grouped into viral fever, dengue, malaria and leptospirosis. RESULTS: Out of 85 cases of thrombocytopenia MPV and PDW values were calculated and MPV and PDW values increased on day 1 when compared to day 2 and day 3 values. Thrombocytopenia was graded into mild, moderate and severe cases based on MPV and PDW values. CONCLUSION: The study noted that both the MPV and PDW have the potential to detect the thrombocytopenia effectively with continuous assessment of blood samples of the patients. The estimation of these indices was also economical.
