BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a poor prognosis without any specific chemotherapy. Androgen receptor (AR) is involved in the pathogenesis of breast cancer, but its role is not clearly defined. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to explore the expression of Androgen receptor and its relationship with clinicopathologic features in TNBC. METHODS: This study investigated 52 cases of immunohistochemicalIy proven TNBC cases from Department of pathology, Tirunelveli Medical College, Tirunelveli, from September 2017 to September 2019. Immunohistochemical assays were performed to determine the expression of AR in 52 TNBC samples. The relationships between AR expression and clinicopathologic datas were statistically analysed. RESULTS: We found that, 42% of TNBCs expressed Androgen receptor. Androgen receptor expression was an independent prognostic marker without any association with clinicopathologic features - age of patient at the time of diagnosis, tumor size, histological type, histological grade, tumor necrosis and lymph node status. Androgen receptor positive TNBC cases are considered to have better prognosis and so, Androgen receptor can be considered as an additional receptor along with Esterogen receptor (ER), Progesterone receptor (PR) and Human epidermal growth factor-2 receptor (Her-2) for prognostic classification of TNBC. CONCLUSION: Androgen receptor expression may be useful as a sub-classification marker for good prognosis in Triple-negative breast cancer and that Androgen receptor -positive Triple-negative breast cancers Triple-negative breast cancer may be responsive to anti-androgen endocrine therapy.
