Abstract

BACKGROUND: Sudden death in young adults is defined as unexpected, clinically unexplained or otherwise obscure even though there needs to be no unnatural element in their causation. Sudden death can be an unexpected outcome in patients with known illness or unexpected outcome in previously healthy people.This study was taken up to analyze histopathologically the possible cause of sudden death. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A study was done on autopsy specimens of young adults aged 15 to 45 years who has died suddenly between January 2018 to June 2019 at Department of Pathology, Coimbatore Medical College, Coimbatore. RESULTS: Out of 100 sudden death cases,78 were males.maximum number of deaths were seen in fourth decade (41-45 years). The cause of death in 55 cases were attributed to cardiac causes, the most common cause being myocardial infarction. The remaining 45 deaths were due to noncardiac causes. CONCLUSION: Cardiovascular pathology is the most common cause of sudden death in young adults. This study highlights the serious health concern in our society and a necessity to create awareness among the population at risk so that sudden deaths can be averted and life expectancy can be improved.
