Abstract
BACKGROUND: Cellblock preparation of the serous fluids are crucial, as staging of malignancy is also based on the presence of malignant cells in the effusion. Differentiating the reactive mesothelial cells from adenocarcinoma cells in histopathological sections is aided by using special stains, their enzyme digestion and immunohistochemistry. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To study the efficacy of special stains with and without enzymatic digestion in differentiating mesothelial cells from adenocarcinomatous cells in cell block preparations. METHODLOGY: The study was conducted in Department of Pathology in Coimbatore Medical College. 50 Cases of serous effusions were taken for cell block preparation. Special stains PAS, PAS-D, Alcian blue and AB-H were applied to them and the difference between adenocarcinomatous effusions and mesothelial cells were read. IHC p53 was used as an adjunct for the special stains. RESULTS: With special stains and enzyme digestion 78% of the cases could be identified as adenocarcinoma deposits. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic significance in differentiating mesothelial cells from adenocarcinoma cells could be made by using special stains and their enzyme digestion.
