Abstract

BACKGROUND: Phyllodes tumors may have Fine needle aspiration cytology features similar to fibroadenoma which comes under fibroepithelial lesions. The cytomorphology of stroma, nuclear features will be helpful in the differentiation of phyllodes tumors from other benign lesions. AIM OF THE STUDY: To study the FNAC features of Histopathological proven cases of phyllodes tumor and to find the diagnostic accuracy of phyllodes tumor in FNAC. METHODOLOGY: This was a retrospective and prospective study of FNAC features of phyllodes tumor with the histopathological proven cases of phyllodes tumor. RESULTS: Out of 30 cases of histopathological proven cases of phyllodes tumor there were 6 cases of malignant phyllodestumor proven by FNAC, 20 cases of FNAC proven benign phyllodestumor, 2 cases of fibroadenoma, 1 case of proliferative breast disease and 1 case of fibrocystic disease in FNAC. Among this there were 2 cases of Border line phyllodes tumor proven in HP, which were given in FNAC as Benign phyllodes tumor and Fibroadenoma respectively. There was 100% sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value ,negative predictive valuand diagnostic accuracy in Malignant phyllodes tumor. In case of Benign phyllodes tumor, there was 86% sensitivity,100% specificity, 100% positive predictive value and 72% negative predictive value. Diagnostic accuracy was found to be 86.7%. CONCLUSION: This study has proven that FNAC is reliable pre operative diagnostic test in the diagnosis of phyllodes tumor of breast ,since it gives a good diagnostic accuracy in the diagnosis of phyllodes tumor of breast. The treatment for fibroadenoma and phyllodes tumor differ an accurate pre operative diagnosis is important.
