Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral venous thrombosis is a rare neurological condition affecting young and middle aged persons with slightly greater predilection for female. Incidence of the disease is 3-4/ million. Pregnancy, puerperium and OC pills are the most common cause for CVT in women. Accounts for 50% of young strokes in India. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To study the outcome of anticoagulants on recanalisation in cerebral venous thrombosis patients in tertiary care centre after 3 months of anticoagulation. METHODS: 30 consecutive patients presenting with cerebral venous thrombosis were enrolled in the study. Diagnosis was made by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance venography (MRV). Patient was treated with intravenous heparin. Warfarin was given for at least 3 months. Cerebral MRI & MRV are done after 3 months. RESULTS: Study showed the most common presenting symptom being headache followed by vomiting and convulsions. Papilledema is the most frequently found sign followed by hemiparesis. Study showed the most common involved sinus being superior Sagittal sinus followed by superior Sagittal and transverse sinus combined. After 3 months of anticoagulation 90%of patients showed evidence of recanalisation with 60%having complete recanalisation, 30% showing partial recanalisation. CONCLUSION: The study suggest recanalisation rate in patients receiving anticoagulation as 90% suggesting most of the Recanalization occur in the initial 3 months following cerebral venous thrombosis in Indian population.
