Abstract

A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Hug Therapy on Depression among Elderly Residents in Selected Old age Homes, Salem. The design adopted was true-experimental design (pre-test – post-test control group). Setting of the study were Vallalar Oldage Home, Steel Plant (Control Group) and Sri Vysyakula Oldage Home, Kandhasramam (Experimental Group). The sample size was 60 and was drawn through simple random sampling technique (Lottery method). Level of depression was assessed by using structured Interview Schedule. Hug therapy was administered for experimental group. Post test done on fourth week of the data collection period. The data gathered were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistical method and interpretations was made on the basis of the objectives of the study. During pre-test, in experimental group, among 30 samples 7 (23.3%) had mild depression, 23 (76.6%) had moderate depression and in control group, among 30 samples, 24 (80%) had mild depression and 6 (20%) had moderate depression. During post test, in experimental group, all samples 30 (100%) had mild depression and in control group 22 (73.33%) samples had mild depression 8 (26.66%) samples had moderate depression. The mean score on level of depression in elderly residents in experimental and control group was 27.3 + 2.563 and 30.36 + 5.363 respectively. The estimated ‘t’ value was 3.40 which is significant at p < 0.05. Hence, the research hypothesis (H1) is retained. There is no significant association (p<0.05) between the level of depression among elderly residents and their selected demographic variables in experimental and control group. Hence, the research hypothesis (H2) is rejected.
