Abstract
Stress and coping are important strategies in an individual’s life. When there is an imbalance they feel deprived of health at all aspects. It is one of the areas for major concern during the period of old age. The main focus of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy on stress and coping strategies among elderly in the old age home. The conceptual framework developed for the study was based on Roy’s stress adaptation model. An extensive review of literature, professional experience and expert’s guidance helped the researcher to design the methodology. This study was conducted in Sheela Senior Citizen Home, Coimbatore. The population of the study was taken as elderly at above 60years of age. Simple random sampling technique was selected and experimental design was used for the study. The data was collected by using Sheldon Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale and Lazarus Coping Scale. The perceived stress scale comprises of ten items and should be indicated by tick mark by the subjects. The scores are obtained by reversing responses (eg: 0=4,1=3,2=2,3=1 &4=0)to the four positively stated items(4,5,7,&8)and summing across all scale items. The scoring system is categorized as no stress (0-10), mild stress (11-20), moderate stress (21-30) and severe stress (31-40). The Lazarus coping scale comprises of 15 items from problem oriented coping and the responses are always, sometimes, never and undecided. Another 15 items from affective oriented coping with the responses as always, sometimes, never and undecided. The items in the scale regarding coping strategies can be indicated by tick mark. The scoring system is categorized as inadequate coping (less than 50), moderate coping (51-70) and adequate coping (more than 70). The pilot study was conducted with 10 samples in old age home at Mathipalayam, Coimbatore. The pilot study, established the practicability and feasibility hence, the researcher proceeded for the main study. The main study was conducted at Sheela Senior Citizen home, Coimbatore. Data collection was done within the given period of 4 weeks. The purpose of the study was explained to the sample, the confidentiality of the subjects was assured and consent was obtained from the sample. The researcher selected the experimental group and control group using the lottery method. The demographic variables was collected using the data. The pretest scores for stress and coping level were assessed for all the 40 samples which included 20 in experimental group and 20 in control group.5 reminiscence therapy sessions were conducted for 45 minutes per session to the 20samples in the experimental group. The post test scores were assessed for both the groups to evaluate the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy. Descriptive and inferential statistics was used for comparison and association of pre-test and post-test scores among the experimental group. The correlation of stress with coping was analyzed by using coefficient correlation. The results revealed that among elderly, in the experimental group, there was a positive relation between stress and coping in the pre test and in the post test, a negative relation between stress and coping. In the control group, there was a negative relation between stress and coping in the pre test and in the post test a positive relation between stress and coping. Association was found by using chi square test. ’t’ test was used to analyze the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy among the elderly in the experimental group. It was found that ‘t’ value was statistically significant at 5% level. This showed that reminiscence therapy was effective among the elderly. ’Z’ test was used to analyze the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy among the elderly in both the groups. It was found that ‘z’ value was statistically significant at 5% level. This showed that reminiscence therapy was effective among the elderly in the experimental group than the control group. RECOMMENDATIONS: ❖ A similar study can be undertaken for large samples in different settings. ❖ A longitudinal study can be undertaken to see the long term effect of reminiscence therapy on stress. ❖ A comparative study can be conducted between adults and elderly. ❖ A comparative study can be conducted between individual reminiscence therapy and group reminiscence therapy. ❖ A comparative study can be conducted to assess the effectiveness of other complimentary therapies on the level of stress. ❖ A similar study can be conducted among employees within an organization.
