Abstract

“A study to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy among primigravid mothers who are attending antenatal OPD in Government Headquarters Hospital, Erode,Tamilnadu”. The present study, to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme among primi gravid mothers regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy in Government head quarters hospital, Erode, was conducted by Ms. Vijimol.G in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Nursing during the year 2010-2012. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the knowledge regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy among primigravid mothers before administering structured teaching programme. 2 To prepare and administer structured teaching programme regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy among primigravid mothers. 3. To assess the knowledge regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy among primigravid mothers after administering structured teaching programme. 4.To compare the pretest and posttest score after structured teaching programme. 5. To associate the pretest knowledge score with selected demographic variables such as age, religion, educational status, occupation, family income, type of family, Weeks of gestation, previous knowledge regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy and sources of information. The conceptual frame work adopted for the study was from King’s Goal Attainment theory based on the components like perception, Judgment, Action, Reaction, Disturbance and Goal setting. The research approach adopted for the study was quasi experimental in nature and one group pretest and post test method.40 primi Gravid mothers were selected for the study by convenient sampling method .The samples collected from Government head quarters hospital, Erode and data was collected by using semi structured questionnaire. Content validity of the tool was obtained from five experts and the reliability of the tool was r=0.94. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics in terms of frequencies, percentage, mean, standard deviation and chi-square test. SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS: Findings related to socio-demographic variables: ❖ In the present study 24(60%) of the primi Gravid mothers were in the age group between 21-25 Years. ❖ The present study revealed that, 24 (60%) of primi Gravid mother’s were Hindus. ❖ The study showed that, 22 (55%) of primi Gravid mother’s had primary school education. ❖ Among 40 samples 25 (62.5%) of the respondents were house wife. ❖ Majority of the mother’s 16 (40%) had monthly income between Rs 3001-4000/month. ❖ Majority of the primi gravid mother’s 31 (77.5%) belonged to Nuclear family. ❖ In the present study most of the mother’s belongs 18 (45%) were in second trimester and 20 (50%) of the respondents belonged to third trimester. ❖ In the present study 38 (95%) have previous knowledge regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy. ❖ The present study revealed that 34 (85%) of the mother’s received knowledge from relatives and neighbors. Findings related to knowledge level before and after structured teaching programme: ❖ The mean knowledge score percentage of pretest 36.81%. ❖ In pretest Primi Gravid mother’s had inadequate knowledge regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy. ❖ The mean knowledge score percentage of post test 67.72%. ❖ The posts mean score percentage of knowledge was higher than knowledge of pretest mean score. ❖ Structured teaching programme increased the knowledge of primi anGravid mothers regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy. ❖ The paired ‘t’ test was significant (=17.24 p <0.05) ie the structured teaching programme was very effective in increasing knowledge level regarding physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy. The mean knowledge score 36.81% before the structured teaching programme had increased to the mean knowledge score 67.72%.The increase in mean score ensure that the structured teaching programme was effective. The findings also revealed that, there is no relationship between certain selected demographic variables such as religion, occupation ,family income, Types of family, Weeks of gestation and previous knowledge. The findings of the study provided guidelines for nursing practice, nursing education, nursing administration and in nursing research. RECOMMENDATIONS: ❖ The study can be replicated on larger samples; thereby findings can be generalized to larger population. ❖ A descriptive study can be done to assess the knowledge and practice. ❖ A comparative study can be conducted between primi antenatal mothers and multigravid mothers with similar set up. ❖ A study can be carried to assess the knowledge and attitudes of primi antenatal mothers about changes during pregnancy. ❖ A similar study can be conducted using other teaching strategies. ❖ Educational programmes on physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy are recommended to all categories of pregnant women’s. ❖ A similar study on physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy may be initiated in other health care settings like community health centers. ❖ A quasi experimental study can be done to evaluate the effectiveness of video teaching programme regarding knowledge on physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy among the antenatal mother.
