Abstract

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: A STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESSS OF PLANNED TEACHING PROGRAMME ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING DEMENTIA AMONG EMPLOYEES AGED ABOVE 40 YEARS WORKING IN SELECTED BANK AT KOTTAYAM DISTRICT, KERALA. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the knowledge of bank employees regarding dementia before planned teaching programme. 2. To administer planned teaching programme on dementia. 3. To assess the knowledge of bank employees regarding dementia after planned teaching programme. 4. To find out the effectiveness of planned teaching programme in terms of gain in knowledge by comparing pretest and posttest knowledge score. 5. To explore the relationship between pretest knowledge scores with selected socio demographic variables like age, sex, education, years of service, income, place of residence, previous knowledge and source of information. The conceptual framework of the present study was developed by the investigator based on Von Bertanlanffy’s General Systems Theory of Learning (1968). The research approach adopted for the study was quasi- experimental approach. The research design selected for the study was one group pretest, posttest, which was used to measure the effectiveness of planned teaching programme. The selection of sample was done by simple random sampling technique and the sample consists of 30 employees with age above 40 years worked at The Ayarkunnam Service Cooperative Bank, Kottayam district, Kerala. The instrument developed and used for the present study was semi structured questionnaire, which had two sections. Section A: Comprised 7 items related to socio demographic variables. Section B: Comprised questions related to knowledge on dementia. The study was conducted during the month of October 2011, the collected data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics in terms of frequencies, percentages, mean, SD, paired t-test and chi-square test. MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY: The major findings of the study were summarized as follows: Findings related to socio demographic variables: ❖ In the present study, among 30 samples 8 (27%) bank employees were belong to 40 – 45 years, 10 (33%) of the samples were in 46 – 50 years and rest of the employees 12 (40%) were above 51 years of old. ❖ Most of the bank employees, 17 (57%) were males. ❖ The present study revealed that majority of employees 14 (47%) had completed graduation, 12 (40%) of the samples had post graduation and remaining 4(13%) of the subjects were completed higher secondary education. ❖ This study stated that, 14 (47%) of employees had 16 – 20 years of service and only 7 (23%) had below 15 years of service. The employees who had more than 21 years of experience were 9 (30%). ❖ The majority of staffs, 12 (40%) of the subjects had monthly income of Rs. 15001 – 20000, 10 (33%) employees received salary Rs. 10001-15000, 5(17%) of employees got Rs. >20000, and only 3 (10%) of the samples had salary Rs. <10000. ❖ The study indicated that 19 (63%) employees were from rural area and 11 (37%) were from urban area. ❖ Nearly 17 (57%) had no previous information regarding dementia and 13 (43%) of respondents had previous knowledge. ❖ The study described that 7 (54%) of respondents got information through mass media, 6 (46%) of the samples acquired information through friends and relatives. Analysis of effectiveness of planned teaching programme: The knowledge level of 26 (87%) bank employees before planned teaching programme was inadequate and 4 (13%) of respondents had moderate knowledge level. None of the employees had adequate knowledge level. After planned teaching programme there was drastic increase in knowledge level. 17 (57%) of the employees had attained moderate level of knowledge, 13 (43%) of the samples had adequate knowledge level and none of the samples had inadequate knowledge level. The posttest mean score percentage (75.56) on dementia was comparatively higher than in pretest mean score percentage (39.33). It confirmed that, there was increase in knowledge after planned teaching programme. The paired‘t’ test analysis was highly significant, t=34.10 (P<0, 05). The result evidently supported the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on dementia. Relationship between socio demographic variables and pretest knowledge: The present study reveals that there was an association between pretest knowledge to age, place of residence, education, previous knowledge and source of information. But, there was no association between knowledge and other socio demographic variables such as sex, income and years of service. RECOMMENDATIONS: On the basis of present study, following recommendations can be made. ❖ The study can be replicated by using a large sample there by findings can be generalized. ❖ A comparative study can be conducted in two different banks with similar set up to identify the similarities and differences in knowledge. ❖ A study can be conducted with control group. ❖ A study can be conducted by involving persons working in different organization. ❖ A quasi experimental study can be conducted with video teaching programme regarding dementia. ❖ A comparative study with illiterate and literate people.
