Abstract

The present study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of stress management strategy among the elderly people living with their families and in old age home. A total number of 100 elderly people who met the inclusion criteria were selected from old age home and elderly people in Perumberkandigai Village. The investigator first introduced her to the elderly people and established good rapport with them. After selection of samples, assessment process had been conducted. On assessment, out of 100 samples 45(90%) of elderly people living with their families had moderate stress and seven (14%) of elderly people living in old age home had moderate stress and five (10%) of elderly people living with their families has severe stress and 43(86%) of elderly people living in old age home had severe stress. After the stress management strategy for 100 elderly people, 23(46%) of elderly people living with their families had moderate stress and 27(54%) had mild stress. 41(82%) of elderly people living in old age home had moderate stress and nine (18%) had mild stress. In evaluating the effectiveness of stress management strategy, the elderly people had adopted to stressful events. There was statistically high significant difference between the effectiveness of stress management strategy of the elderly people residing at old age home and with families was retained. FINDINGS OF THE STUDY: The study findings showed that the following results: 1. The assessment mean score was 10.78 with standard deviation of 15.82 and evaluation mean was 15.36 with standard deviation of 12.69. 2. When comparing the effectiveness of stress management strategy among the elderly people living with their family and in old age home, the t value was 35.0 regarding the family elderly people and t value was 17.1 regarding the elderly people living in old age home. There was statistically high significant difference between the effectiveness of stress management strategy of the elderly people residing at old age home and with families was retained. 3. The effectiveness of stress management strategy for the elderly people was associated with the demographic variables. It showed that there was significant association between the demographic variables and stress management strategy for elderly people living in family. Hence the effectiveness of stress management strategy was dependent of demographic variables. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: ❖ Stress eliminates joy, laughter, empathy, happiness and love. Finally, it slimes the gates to the outside world, leaving its victim alone and isolated. The prevention is the best measure to promote mental health among elderly. The health care professionals need to explore the prevalence of stress using more culturally congruent studies. ❖ The investigator recommend the following implications drawn from the study which are of vital concern for nursing service, nursing education, nursing administration and nursing research. NURSING SERVICE: ❖ The therapeutic approach is based on the individualized client needs of the elderly. ❖ The nurse may collaborate with the client, family and significant others to identify and operational therapeutic interventions. The mental health nurse work closely with the family members to define the care giving role. Cope with the loss of reciprocity in their relationship with the client. ❖ The mental health nurse in the community settings has irresponsibility of integrating mental health care along with community general health care. The mental health nurse should create awareness among the community through the mass media about the myths and facts aged and the needs of the elderly which may be helpful in changing the unfavorable attitudes against aged. NURSING EDUCATION: ❖ The nursing curriculum prepared should be able to prepare the student, to educate the community regarding the various aspects of aging. The mental health nurse needs to be educated regarding the stress among the elderly, its prevention, early deduction and appropriate intervention. ❖ State and national level of conferences, workshops, seminars and symposiums can be held for all nursing personnel on community mental health nursing in order to update their knowledge and adequate weight age in the curriculum both in theory and practice of given will prepare the future students to work effectively in community mental health programe. NURSING ADMINISTRATION: ❖ The nurse administrator should arrange and orientation programme in the institutionalized elderly for the staff might be helpful in enhancing team to understand the mental health problems of the inmates. The mental health nurse should plan and implement policies to prevent the stress among elderly people. NURSING RESEARCH: ❖ Research in the field of mental health nursing should pay more attention towards the early recognition of stress among elderly using culturally congruent ways of the assessing the stress among elderly. RECOMMENDATIONS: The investigator recommends the following studies in the field of nursing research: 1. The study can be replicated on a large sample of elderly to rule out the stress which can be culturally sensitive tools. 2. A comparative study can be done between male and female population to assess the level of stress. 3. A comparative study can be done between urban and rural population to assess the level of stress. 4. An experimental study can be undertaken with matched controlled groups to elicit the specific needs for the elderly people and measure the psycho education programme by the nurses.
