Abstract

A one group pre test-post test research design was adapted to evaluate the effectiveness of Relaxation therapy among clients with Anxiety disorder. Progressive muscle relaxation was provided to clients those who met the inclusion criteria. The study was conducted at psychiatric outpatient department in Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Melmaruvathur. The convienient sampling technique was administered and sample size was determined as thirty. Standardized Hamilton anxiety rating scale to analyse the anxiety level of clients with anxiety disorder. Progressive muscle relaxation was provided to reduce the clients level of anxiety. FINDINGS OF THE STUDY: The overall mean was 41.1 with standard deviation of 3.01 on the assessment day and the overall mean was 29.1 with standard deviation of 6.91 on the evaluation day. The calculated value was greater than tabulated value so accepted alternative hypothesis. This shows that relaxation therapy was effective. Correlation was done to assess the effectiveness of relaxation therapy among clients with anxiety disorder with the selected demographic variables. It shows that, there was a significant correlation between the relaxation therapy and the demographic variables of clients with anxiety disorder such as age of the client, sex, occupation, marital status and availability of support system. NURSING IMPLICATION: Psycho therapies play a major role in treating clients with mental disorders. Relaxation techniques, is one among them which will assist in relieving muscle tension, and greatly improve the health status and reduce anxiety. ❖ The present study can help nurses to enrich their knowledge on care of clients with anxiety disorder. ❖ Help nurses to identity the underlying causes and risk factors of clients with anxiety disorder by assessing the level of anxiety. ❖ Understanding the needs of clients with anxiety disorder may help nurse to plan and provide appropriate nursing care. NURSING EDUCATION: ❖ Nursing curriculum can be modified with increased emphasis of psychotherapies. ❖ Recommendation for short term courses in relation to psychiatric nursing care. ❖ Students can also be trained to work in psychiatric ward under proper guidance. NURSING SERVICE: ❖ Nurses working in psychiatric department should have special training about various psychotherapies. ❖ Nurses working in psychiatric ward should have enough knowledge about care of clients with Anxiety disorder they should be a keen observer since the clients cannot realize their needs. ❖ Nurses should never fail to assess the client before starting care so that they can plan the nursing care accordingly. ❖ Rewards can be given to the outstanding nurses in each year in all Institutions which will boost the temperament of the nurses. ❖ Facilitation and all required equipments to be made available for managing clients with anxiety disorder in all hospitals. ❖ Mass health education programme can be organized on relaxation therapy. NURSING ADMINISTRATION: ❖ People at the administration position can make necessary policies to implement the concept of mental health nursing. ❖ The ideal set up of the psychiatric ward should be beneficial for the better care. ❖ Administration can organize in service education programs. ❖ Adequate staffing in psychiatric ward to be given as per norms. NURSING RESEARCH: ❖ This study shows the awareness about the clients with anxiety disorder and its management among public. ❖ The study reveals the sound knowledge of the nurse in using various techniques of relaxation therapy. ❖ The study is preliminary step for exploring the concept of nursing and involved nursing care with respect to the involvement of the client. ❖ Further investigator can use this study as a reference material. ❖ The study provides awareness for further studies among the student in this area. RECOMMENDATIONS: ❖ The study can be done in comparing with other Anxiety disorders problems and any associated problems with Anxiety disorders. ❖ Descriptive analysis can be done with Anxiety disorders and complications of Anxiety disorders. ❖ Comparative study between the level of anxiety in Generalised anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder can be done. ❖ The study can be done in large samples. ❖ The study can be conducted in clients in a particular region or area to find out the influence of environmental factors for anxiety disorder. ❖ A comparative study can be done between the rural and urban clients. ❖ An evaluative study to assess the effectiveness of music therapy on clients with Anxiety disorders. ❖ A true experimental study could be done to assess the effectiveness of deep breathing exercise on clients with Anxiety disorders.
