Abstract
The present study entitled “effectiveness of dry heat application over peripheral IV cannulation site on number of IV insertion attempts, discomfort and anxiety among patients admitted in KMCH, Coimbatore” was undertaken by Register number 30104409, during the year 2010 – 2012 in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Science in Nursing at KMCH College of Nursing, Coimbatore, which is affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. Chennai. OBJECTIVES: 1. To Assess the number of IV insertion attempts, discomfort and anxiety in the dry heat application group and no heat application group. 2. To Compare the number of IV insertion attempts, discomfort and anxiety of dry heat group with no heat group. 3. To Correlate the discomfort and anxiety of dry heat group with no heat group. 4. To Associate the selected demographic variable with number of IV insertion attempts, discomfort and anxiety. RESEARCH DESIGN: True experimental post-test only design. SETTING: Emergency department and Medical and surgical wards of KMCH, Coimbatore. SAMPLES: The sample size was 200 patients. Among them 100 subjects were assigned to dry heat application and 100 subjects were in control group with no heat application. Convenient sampling technique was used to select samples. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: Modified Lydia E. Hall’s Care, Core, Cure model was adapted. INTERVENTIONS: The subjects in the dry heat application group received heat application prior to intravenous cannulation by using hot water bag. The cannulating nurse recorded the vein assessment scores and number of IV insertion attempts. The patients were asked to record the level of discomfort and anxiety in the visual analog scale and this will be measured by the investigator. RESULTS: The subjects who received dry heat application had significant reduction in the number of IV insertion attempts, level of discomfort and anxiety. CONCLUSION: This study results revealed that dry heat application over peripheral IV cannulation site is effective in reducing the number of IV insertion attempts, discomfort and anxiety of patients.
