Abstract
Obesity is now among the most widespread medical problems affecting children and adolescents living in the world. About 15% of adolescents (aged 12-19 years) and children (aged 6-11 years) are obese. The numbers are expected to continue increasing. The reason for the same can be attributed to physical inactivity. Hence, there is a need to have appropriate measures to prevent and control obesity. The study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of physical activities on obesity among adolescents’ obese children, at selected schools, Salem. Quasi experimental research design was used and 60 samples were selected by convenience sampling technique. 30 samples were assigned to experimental and 30 samples to control group. The general information was collected and categorised them according to the classification of obesity based on NHLBI (2000). After the pre-test, physical activities were given for one hour per day to the 30 samples in the experimental group. Post test was done after 28 days. The findings show that, in the experimental group 25(83.33%) were in grade-I obesity and 5(16.67%) were in grade-II obesity in pre test whereas in post test 23(76.67%) were in grade-I obesity, 5(16.67%) were in grade-II obesity and 2(6.67%) were in overweight. In the control group 27(90%) were in grade-I obesity and 3(10%) were in grade II obesity in pre-test and they remained the same in post-test. In experimental group, the mean pre-test score of height was 153.93 + 5.75 and mean post- test score of height was 153.93 ± 5.75 with no mean difference. In control group the mean pre-test score of height was 156.07 + 5.53 and mean post-test score of height was 156.07 ± 5.53 with no mean difference. In experimental group the mean pre-test score of weight was 76.27 + 9.45 and mean post- test score of weight was 75.86 + 8.1 with mean difference of 0.41. In control group the mean pre-test score of weight was 82.23 + 5.45 and mean post-test score of weight was 82.25 ±5.43 with mean difference of -0.02. The ‘t’ value was 2.74 at p<0.05 level which shows that physical activity has the significant effect on obesity. There was a significant association between the pre test grade of obesity among adolescents obese children and their selected background variables like occupation of father (χ2 :24.47) and items taken more (χ2 :8.26) at p<0.05 level. Hence physical activities can be practised regularly by the adolescents to avoid progression and control the obesity.
