Abstract
The purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding contraceptive methods among primi mothers in Vellode, Primary Health Centre at Erode District. Quasi experimental one group pre test – post test design was used in the study. The conceptual frame work of this study was based on Neuman’s model. The instrument used for data collection was knowledge questionnaire regarding contraceptive method. Non Probability purposive sampling technique was used for this study to select the samples. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (chi – square, paired “t” test) were used to analyze the data and to test hypothesis. The major study findings were as follows: The maximum numbers of primi mothers 80.0% were in the age group of 18 – 22 years. The proportion of 50 primi mothers 50% were in primary education. The proportion of 50 primi mothers 80% were in nuclear family. The proportion of 50 primi mothers 84% were in hindu religion. The proportion of 50 primi mothers 70% were in rural area. The proportion of 50 primi mothers 60% were in daily wages. The proportion of 50 primi mothers 50% were in earning below Rs. 1000/- per month. The proportion of primi mothers 60% were in getting information through television. The level of knowledge was inadequate among 70%, moderately adequate among 30% and it was adequate only in 0% before structure teaching programme. The level of knowledge was adequate among 80% and it was moderately adequate in 20% after structure teaching programme. The mean of knowledge regarding contraceptive methods in the pre test was 12.56 and in the post test was 26.76% respectively. It revealed structure teaching programme was found to be effective in improving in knowledge regarding contraceptive methods among primi mothers. There was a significant difference in the mean scores between pre test and post test in relation to knowledge of primi mothers regarding contraceptive methods. No association was found between knowledge with selected demographic variables such as there is no significant association between the knowledge and demographic variable (type of family, religion, community, occupation, family income) of primi mothers at p>0.005 level. There is significant association between the knowledge and demographic variable (age, education and source of information) at p<0.05 level. CONCLUSION: The following conclusions were derived based on the study findings: Structure teaching programme was effective to increase the knowledge regarding contraceptive methods among primi mothers. As per the study findings, the level of knowledge was adequate only in 0% in the pre test, where as during post test; the level of knowledge of study subjects was adequate among 80% and none of them inadequate level of knowledge. There was a significant difference in the mean scores between pre test and post test in relation to knowledge of primi mothers, regarding contraceptive methods. No association was found between knowledge with selected demographic variables such as there is no significant association between the knowledge and demographic variable (type of family, religion, community, occupation, and family income) of primi mothers at p>0.005 level. There is significant association between the knowledge and demographic variable (age, education and source of information), of primi mothers at p<0.05 level.
