Abstract
Pregnancy including birth is perhaps the most emotional and dramatic experience in a women’s life. However, not all men are able or willing to attend the child birth and antenatal care because of cultural conditioning and their personality. In recent years the focus on fathers and fathering has gained momentum has by the birth partners need to be kept informed, supporter and included in all activities in which mother desires their participation. The investigator conducted the study to assess the effectiveness of Information, Education and Communication on preparation for parenthood among the husbands. The objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of Information, Education and Communication programme on knowledge acquisition. Thus the investigator applied a modifid Alabwign Von Bettanlaffy General Open System Model (1986) for the study. The investigator used pre experimental one group pre test post test research design and 60 samples were selected by using non probability convenient sampling technique who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The investigator conducted the study at Ranipet Municipal hospital, Vellore District. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Analysis of demographic variables was done in terms of frequency and percentage distribution. Independent sample ‘t’ test was used to analyse the effectiveness between pre test and post test group and chi square test was used to analyse the association between the demographic variables. The findings concluded that in pre test, the majority 60 (100%) of husbands has inadequate knowledge and in the post test, the majority 46 (76.67%) husbands had adequate level of knowledge and 14 (23.33%) of husbands had moderate level of knowledge. Hence the Information, Education and Communication package was effective on preparation for parenthood among the husbands. Hence the nurse midwife can motivate husbands involvement in antenatal care and imparting knowledge which can lead to healthier mother and baby.
