Abstract

A study to assess the level of physical activity in relation to deformities among Hansen’s disease patients in selected leprosy home, Kanyakumari district with a view to develop Information booklet was conducted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the Degree of Master of Science in Nursing, Christian College of Nursing, Neyyoor which is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. University, Chennai during the year 2011. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the deformities among patients with Hansen’s disease. 2. To assess the level of physical activity among patients with Hansen’s disease. 3. To correlate the level of physical activity in relation to deformities among patients with Hansen’s disease. 4. To find out the association between deformity and physical activity with the selected demographic variables such as age, sex, education, marital status, duration of Hansen’s disease, duration of stay at leprosy home, presence of chronic illness, history of treatment. 5. To develop an information booklet based on the findings. HYPOTHESES: 1. There would be significant relationship between the physical activity and deformities of Hansen’s disease. 2. There would be a significant association between the physical activity and the selected demographic variables. All hypothesis were tested at 0.05 level of significance. METHODOLOGY: This study was based on Callista Roy’s Adaptation model. The design adopted for this study was descriptive correlational design to assess the level of physical activity in relation to deformities among Hansen’s disease patients. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample of 30 Hansen’s disease patients from the selected leprosy home. The data collection tool developed for generating the necessary data was a Physical Examination Checklist to Assess the Extent of Deformity by WHO Deformity Grading System of Hansen’s disease (1998), Modified Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities (PASIPD) to assess the level of physical Activity. The content validity of tool was established by seven clinical experts. The reliability of the Physical Examination Checklist to Assess the Extent of Deformity by WHO Deformity Grading System of Hansen’s disease (1998) was found to be (γ = 0.945) by inter-rater method, Modified Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities (γ =0.75) was established by the Crohnbach’s alpha method. The instruments were found reliable. Pilot study was conducted to find out the feasibility of the study. The final study was conducted by administering the tool to the study subjects. The data obtained were analysed in terms of both descriptive and inferential statistics. FINDINGS OF THE STUDY: 1. Based on the age, majority 17 out of 30 (57%) were between the age group of 51 – 60 years, regarding duration of Hansen’s disease, majority 9 out of 30 (30%) had above 20 years, with regard to duration of stay at leprosy home, 9 out of 30 (30%) stayed above 15 years, regarding presence of chronic illness, 16 out of 30 (53%) had no chronic illness. 2. Majority of Hansen’s disease patients 15 out of 30 (50%) had moderate deformity. 3. Large number of sample subjects 14 out of 30 (47%) were moderately active. 4. The relationship between deformities with the physical activity was negatively correlated. (‘γ’ = -0.71, P<0.05). 5. There was no significant association between deformity score and level of physical activity score with the selected demographic variables. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. This study can be done with larger samples. 2. This study can be done among the Hansen’s disease patients at different areas like rehabilitation centres, community. 3. An observational study can be conducted in the actual practice for a period of time. 4. A study can be conducted among Hansen’s disease patient’s living in home settings with their family. 5. A qualitative research can be done among Hansen’s disease patients to study the human experience of health and behaviours. 6. A comparative study can be conducted to study the difference between physical activity of Hansen’s disease patients and other disabilities like poliomyelitis and congenital defects. 7. A study can be done on knowledge and practice among Hansen’s disease patients before and after providing health education.
