Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Premarital Counselling is an advice given to the couple before marriage. It helps or assists the couple to identify the areas of difference between the couple that may become mother would have given necessary information regarding premarital issues then the above problems would have not occured. The conceptual frame work is use for the study was Modified Becker’s Health Belief Model (1974). OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY 1. Assess the knowledge of mothers of adolescent girls regarding premarital counseling in urban and rural area. 2. Assess the attitude of mothers of adolescent girls regarding premarital counseling in urban and rural area. 3. To compare the knowledge and attitude of mothers of adolescent girls. regarding premarital counseling in urban and rural area. 4. Associate the knowledge and attitude of mothers of adolescent girls regarding premarital counseling in urban and rural area. METHODOLOGY: According to the statement of problem and objectives of the study non experimental exploratory objectives of the study non- experimental exploratory design was adopted. 200 mothers of adolescent girls (100 from Choolai and 100 from Medavakkam) were selected by Systematic Random Sampling Technique. Data were collected using structured interview schedule, collected data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. FINDINGS: In urban area among 100 mothers, 75% inadequate knowledge, 25% had moderate knowledge on premarital counseling. In the rural area mothers were having inadequate knowledge and 13% of mothers were having knowledge and 3% of mothers were having moderate knowledge on premarital counseling. Regarding attitude in urban area the mothers had positive attitude than rural mothers. CONCLUSION: The present study compares the knowledge and attitude of mothers of adolescent girls on premarital counseling in both urban and rural area, the results revealed that the urban mothers were having moderate knowledge on premarital coulselling than rural areas and attitude towards premarital counseling than mothers is the rural area. Greater awareness has to be created among the mothers regarding premarital counseling through mass health education, individual counseling, family counseling and group counseling.
