Abstract

The focus of the study was to evaluate the level of knowledge and attitude among leprosy clients on self care management. The conceptual frame work developed for the study was based on the Bandura’s social cognitive theory. An extensive review of literature, professional experience and expert’s guidance helped the investigator to design the methodology. This study was conducted in Maruthamalai, Coimbatore. The population of the study was considered as the leprosy clients of age group less than 55 years. One group pre-test and post-test design was used. Purposive sampling technique was adopted. The data was collected by using structured questionnaire to assess the knowledge. The questionnaire covering knowledge of eye, hand and foot care. By using five point likert scale, the attitude was assessed. The content validity of tool was obtained from various experts from community health department. The pilot study was conducted with 10 samples at Vimal Jeevan Santhi Leprosy Association, Coimbatore. The findings from the pilot study, established the practicability and feasibility, With that the researcher proceeded for the main study. The main study was conducted from 28th June 2010 to 28th July 2010 at Amarjothi Leprosy Nivaran Sangh, Maruthamalai, Coimbatore. Data collected by interview method. Pre-test done with the tools and teaching was given individually, post-test was conducted on 7th day after education by using the same questionnaire to find the effectiveness of teaching. The data was tabulated by formulating frequency table. Level of knowledge and attitude was assessed by using descriptive statistics; ‘t’ test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme by comparing pre-test and post-test scores of knowledge and attitude. There was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores on knowledge and attitude scores. Chi-square analysis was done to associate the findings of knowledge and attitude with selected demographic variables. There is no association between age, sex, occupation and level of knowledge but there is an association between education and level of knowledge. There is no association between sex and occupation on attitude, but there is an association between age and education on attitude. This study concludes that the structured teaching programme was effective. RECOMMENDATIONS: The study recommends the following for further research (i) Adequate screening should be done to leprosy clients. (ii) Self instructional modules should be distributed to community, regarding self care management, prevention and early detection of complications such as ulcer. (iii) Extensive use of mass media propaganda will help in prevention and early detection of ulcer. (iv) The similar study can be conducted with large samples in different settings.
