Abstract
Giving birth to a new life is a wondrous experience for every woman. In an effort to make the childbirth a positive experience for women by reducing the duration of labour processs, acupressure on SP6 acupoint is found to be effective. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Acupressure on SP6 Acupoint in reducing the duration of labour process among primipartutients. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure on SP6 acupoint on duration of labour process in experimental group. The research design adapted for this study was posttest only control group design. The conceptual framework for this study was based on Ela Joy Lehrmans theory of midwifery Practice (1981).The study was conducted in Janet hospital and Jagadha hospitals at Trichy. Non probability purposive sampling technique was adopted. The sample size was 60, 30 in experimental and 30 in control group. The self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. The duration of labour process was assessed by maintaining the partograph. The intervention of acupressure on SP6 acupoint was applied for the primipartutients under the experimental group for a period of 40-60seconds during each uterine contractions on alternative legs. The collected data were analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Independent ‘t’ test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure on SP6 acupoint in reducing the duration of labour process among primipartutients. The findings of the study revealed that with regard to effectiveness of acupressure on SP6 acupoint in reducing the duration of labour process among primipartutients, the obtained “t” value 18.22,(from 3cm cervical dilatation to full dilatation) 6.3 (from full cervical dilatation to the fetus delivery), 15.82(from 3cm cervical dilatation to the fetus delivery) was significant at p< 0.001, p<0.05 and p<0.001 respectively.
