Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: A study to determine the effectiveness of weight reduction package among obese women residing at Manamadurai, Sivagangai district. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the obesity by measuring BMI of the client before administering the weight reduction package. 2. To assess the obesity by measuring BMI after administering the weight reduction package. 3. To assess the level of dietary practices and physical activity after administration of package. 4. To find out an effectiveness of weight reduction package on obesity in terms of desirable change in BMI and dietary practices. 5. To associate between weight reduction packages and demographic variables (age, educational qualification, occupation, monthly income of the family, religion, food habits, marital status and gluttonous). HYPOTHESES: 1. Mean post test BMI is significantly lower than the mean pre test BMI. 2. Mean post test dietary practices is significantly higher than mean pre test dietary practices. 3. There is a significant association between effectiveness of weight reduction package and the demographic variables (age, educational qualification, occupation, monthly income of the family, religion, food habits, marital status and gluttonous). METHODOLOGY: A quantitative approach was used for the study .The study population comprised of obese women whose BMI ( ≥ 25) was greater than expected for their age residing at Manamadurai. A snow ball sampling technique was used to select the samples. The data collection tool used were demographic variables, structured dichotomous questionnaire to assess the dietary pattern of the women and an observational checklist to assess the exercises practiced by the women. MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY: ❖ Majority of 29 (48%) the obese women were between the ages of were between 31-36yrs. ❖ With regard to occupation of the women majority of 38 (63.3%)were sedentary workers. ❖ Regarding educational qualification 0f the subjects, 46 (76.6%) had higher secondary and above level education. ❖ With regard to monthly income of the family, majority of 36 (60%) were Rs.10,001/- and above. ❖ In respect of religion majority of the subjects 36(60%) were Hindu. ❖ In relation to food habits 42(70%) were non-vegetarian . ❖ With regard to marital status, most of the subjects 41(68.3%) were married. ❖ Regarding frequent eaters most of 43(71.6%) were not frequent eaters. FINDINGS RELATED TO LEVEL OF OBESITY BASED ON LEVEL OF BMI: ❖ Levels of obesity classified as overweight, Grade-I (obesity) and Grade-II (extra obese) before and after intervention. In pre test among the subjects, 40 (66.6%) were in Grade-I (overweight), 18 (30%) were in Grade-II (obesity) and 2 (3.3%) were in Grade-III (extra obese) before intervention. ❖ In post test among the women, 34 (56.6%) were in Grade-I (overweight), 14 (23.3%) were in Grade-II (obesity) and 0 (0) were in Grade-III (extra obese) after intervention. This shows that about 12 (21%) of the women loss their weight and entered into normal BMI. This indicates that the weight reduction package (diet control accompanied exercises) is effective in reduction of obesity among obese women. FINDINGS RELATED TO LEVEL OF DIETARY PRACTICE AND EXERCISES: ❖ Level of dietary practice classified as desirable dietary practices, moderate dietary practice and poor dietary practice. In pre test among the women, 6 (10%) were having desirable dietary practices, 11 (18%) were having moderate practice, and 42 (72%) were poor dietary practice resulting in weight gain. ❖ In post test among the women, 15 (25%) were having desirable dietary practice, 33(55%) were having moderate dietary practice and 12 (20%) were having poor dietary practice. ❖ Levels of exercises classified as good, average and poor. In post test among the women, 3 (5%) have done poor practice, 47 (78%) were average in practice and 10 (17%) were good in performing the exercises. ❖ There was a significant association between the post test level of dietary practices and the demographic variables of age, occupation, monthly income of the family, marital status and frequent eating habits (gluttonous) . ❖ There was no significant association between the demographic variables and the post test level of practice. RECOMMENDATIONS: ❖ A similar study can be conducted in larger group to generalize the findings. ❖ A long term study to reinforce the effectiveness of weight reduction package can be undertaken. ❖ A similar study can be performed among younger children, adolescent girls and adult males. ❖ An extensive descriptive study to assess the knowledge, attitude and food practice among obese women can be conducted. ❖ A study can be conducted to assess the prevalence of obesity. ❖ A comparative study can be conducted between dietary modification and physical activity. ❖ A similar study can be conducted to know the effect of weight reduction package for more than one year in reducing the BMI. ❖ A similar study can be conducted to know its effectiveness in prevention of cardiac diseases. ❖ A study can be done to assess the barriers in using weight reduction package to reduce BMI. CONCLUSION: The result supported that combination of both healthy dietary practices and physical activity is very suitable and practicable therapy or non pharmacological measure of reduction in BMI among obesity. The findings suggest that weight reduction package can be an effective, cost-free intervention for reducing BMI.
