Abstract

The statistics reveals the incidence are very high in India infant mortality rate is very high due to gastro enteritis diseases. More than one in five children does not reach their first birthday due to acute gastro enteritis. The study was conducted on the effectiveness of nursing care for children with acute gastro enteritis. Individualized nursing care was provided to 30 samples, those who met the inclusive criteria. Evaluative research design was adapted and the study was conducted at Acharapakkam. In this study simple random sampling was administered and sample size was 30.The prepared tool collected. The demographic variables, had been collected by using prepared tool, ongoing assessment was done with rating scale to analyze the health condition of children with acute gastro enteritis and standard nursing care plan was prepared to render care as checking vital signs, assessment of degree of dehydration, fever management, maintenance of nutritional status, maintain intake and output chart, maintenance of personal hygiene, and health education to the care taker. CONCLUSION: From the assessment of children with acute gastro enteritis showed that 7% were in mild health condition, 33% were in moderate health condition and 60% were in severe health condition. From the evaluation of children with acute gastro enteritis showed that 73% were in mild health condition, 27% were in moderate health condition and none was in severe health condition. There was statistically p<0.01 significant increase in health status could be found in relation to effectiveness of nursing care. NURSING IMPLICATIONS: The study gives awareness among nurses in identifying the problem and complaints at an early stage nurses have major role in any health care setting and they should be able to take up the role of giving importance to sick children with acute gastro enteritis. So, nurses need to have thorough knowledge about the assessment of dehydration, fluid calculation and also should take up the important role of education and reinforcing the parents, family members and care takers about the importance of acute gastro enteritis management , preparation of oral rehydration solution, maintenance of personal hygiene and in normal growth and development. The implications of the study can be seen in areas of nursing practice, nursing education, nursing administration, and nursing research. NURSING PRACTICE: ❖ The principle role of nurses is to provide care and comfort to carry out specific nursing functions. The planned nursing intervention are to be scheduled in the community set up in the fixed date with time, for the children as well as to the care taker or family members. ❖ The study implies that nurse should help the children to regain the normal status through healing process. Although treatment skills that promote physical healing which are important to care givers, it implies the need for change that has to be introduced by the nursing profession. ❖ Before nurses can utilize their practice they need to have strong foundation in terms of education not only as a role to student but also give importance to the newly appointed Auxiliary nurse midwife, Multi purpose health worker, and village health workers who have close contact with the rural population. ❖ Orientation programme for new staff to acquire the concept and management of acute gastro enteritis. ❖ Updating the knowledge of Auxiliary nurse midwife, Multi purpose health worker, and Village health worker by proper and relevant in-service education awareness programme, refreshment course, workshop and seminar, emphasizing acute gastro enteritis. ❖ The present trend in health care delivery system emphasizes on preventive as well as curative measures. ❖ The study gives awareness among nurses in identifying the problems and complications regarding acute gastro enteritis. NURSING EDUCATION: ❖ The present study emphasizes on the encouragement of the staff nurse to undergo continuing nursing education programme, specialized courses or training regarding the care of acute gastro enteritis to update their knowledge. ❖ The leader in nursing care confronted to undertake the health needs of the most vulnerable by effective organization and management. The nurse administrator should take active part in health policy, developing protocol, procedure and standing orders related to care of acute gastro enteritis. ❖ The nurse educator, whenever plan to provide instruction regarding care of under five years children with acute gastro enteritis should provide opportunity to develop skill and attitude in handling the children with acute gastro enteritis. NURSING ADMINISTRATION: ❖ Findings of this study help nurse administrator to allocate resources to do further studies in nursing care of under five children with acute gastro enteritis. This may include all ancillary personnel who provide support patient care services. ❖ The study findings will serve as a background for further study regarding the care of below five year with acute gastro enteritis. ❖ Based on this study finding the nursing administrator can conduct retrospective study to assure the quality of nursing care. In this research finding, the effectiveness of nursing care would be more significant for children with acute gastro enteritis. ❖ Nursing administrator can arrange a mass health education programme to public to create awareness regarding prevention and management of acute gastro enteritis. NURSING RESEARCH: ❖ The present study has given the base to conduct the retrospective quality study nursing care. ❖ Usage of research findings should become a part of the quality assurance evaluation to enhance individual performance as a whole. RECOMMENDATION: Based on the research findings the following recommendations can be made: ❖ The similar study can be done with large number of samples. ❖ A comparative study can be conducted between urban and rural community. ❖ A study helps to provide effective nursing care for children with acute gastro enteritis. ❖ Comparative study can be done on different age group of children. ❖ A comparative study can be done on different age group and between the male and female.
