Abstract

A pre experimental study to determine the effectiveness of information, education and communication package on knowledge and expressed practice regarding care of children with cerebral palsy among mothers at Spastic Society School In Trichirappalli during the year 2010-2011. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the knowledge of mothers regarding care of children with cerebral palsy. 2. To assess the expressed practice of mothers regarding care of children with cerebral palsy 3. To evaluate the effectiveness of IEC package on knowledge and expressed practice of mother’s regarding care of children with cerebral palsy. 4. To find out the relationship between the knowledge and expressed practice of mothers regarding care of children with cerebral palsy. 5. To determine the association of selected background variables with the knowledge of mothers regarding care of children with cerebral palsy. 6. To determine the association of selected background variables with the expressed practice of mothers regarding care of children with cerebral palsy. Conceptual Framework : Rosenstock’s and Becker’s health belief model. Research Design : Pre experimental design O1 X O2 Population : mothers having children with cerebral palsy. Sample size : 30 mothers having children with cerebral palsy. Sampling Technique : non probability convenience sampling Setting : Spastic Society School at Trichirappalli. Tool : knowledge and expressed practice questionnaire. Data Collection: Pretest was administered for 30 minutes to each mother and the Information, education and communication package was given to the participants for 50 minutes. The investigator had completed 3 samples daily and after15 days, posttest was administered to assess the knowledge and expressed practice. Data Analysis: The analysis was done by SPSS 13th version using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (paired ‘t’ test, correlation and chi square test) to test the research hypotheses. MAJOR FINDING: 1. The mean pretest level of knowledge is higher than the mean post test level of knowledge. 2. The mean pretest level of expressed practice is higher than the mean post test level of expressed practice. 3. There is significant improvement in the level of knowledge and expressed practice after administering the IEC package which shows the IEC given was effective. 4. There was a negative correlation between the post test knowledge and post test expressed practice of mothers. 5. Significant association was found between the posttest knowledge and background variable only for the mother’s education at p < 0.05 level of significance. 6. There was no significant association found between posttest expressed practice and the background variables. CONCLUSION: Training the mothers is very important regarding care of children with cerebral palsy. Training improves the self care activities of children with cerebral palsy. Mothers have positive attitude towards, that the continuous training will change and improve their children with cerebral palsy in the aspect of self-care (brushing, dressing, toileting and feeding). Mother’s knowledge and expressed practices were improved after the administration of information, education and communication package. There was a negative correlation between the knowledge and expressed practices. Though the mothers have adequate knowledge, their level of practice is lagging behind because the individual capacity of the children is not permitting the mothers to practice self-care of their children.
