Abstract

Behavioral problem is a negative attitude based on age. Child normal behavior depends on various natural and environmental circumstances. Parents are the first to whom a child makes and develops his concerns regarding his needs and wants. Behavioral studies pointed out lots of stimulants that work as catalyze to provoke problem behaviors in preschool children and a continuous practice of such attitude makes it an integral part of child’s personality. The present study was undertaken to assess the level of knowledge of mothers of preschool children on selected behavioral problems and to impart a structured teaching programme on behavioral problems in rural community area of Kulasekharam. The over all objective of this study was to determine the effect of structured teaching programme on behavioral problems in preschool children among mothers of preschool children in selected community village, Kulasekharam. Quasi experimental design was used for the study. The setting of the study was rural community village of Kulasekharam in Kanyakumari District. The samples of 60 mothers with preschool children (3 years – 6 years) who satisfied the inclusion criteria were included for the study. Purposive sampling technique was used for selection of the samples. Ethical aspects of this study was maintained throughout study. The tool used for the study was structured questionnaire on behavioral problems. The questionnaire was tested for validity prior to the pilot study. Pilot study was conducted among 6 samples. The main study was done with 60 samples, 30 in experimental group and 30 in control group. Pretest was conducted in experimental and control group. Structured teaching programme was given on behavioral problems in preschool children for the experimental group. After 7 days post test was conducted for both groups. The data gathered were analyzed by both descriptive and inferential statistics based on the objectives of the study. The knowledge of behavioral problems in preschool children among mothers in experimental and control group were 10.3 + 3.1 and 10.8 + 2.1 respectively (t = 0.70). The comparison of mean post test level of knowledge of experimental and control group after structured teaching programme were 17.5 and 11.3 respectively. The level of knowledge was increased and was statistically highly significant at 0.05 level (t = 43.66). Based on the study findings following conclusion was drawn. The level of knowledge among mothers regarding behavioral problems in preschool children was increased after structured teaching programme and was highly significant at 0.05 level. There was no significant association between the level of knowledge and selected demographic variables.
