Abstract
The epidemic of obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. Unhealthy diet and physical inactivity are two of the main risk factors of obesity among adolescents. The overweight / obesity and its related diseases are preventable. This study is intended to determine the effectiveness of intervention package i.e. Yoga and Counselling on diet and coping with stress, on weight reduction and improvement in the lifestyle pattern among overweight and obese adolescents in selected schools at Madurai. Pre-test and Post-test Non-equivalent Control Group Quasi-Experimental Design was adopted for this study. Sixty overweight and obese adolescents were selected as samples using purposive sampling technique. Among them, 30 adolescents were assigned to the experimental group and 30 adolescents to the control group randomly. Adolescents in experimental group had yoga session 30 -40minutes daily for 5 days a week during morning hours and had teaching on diet and coping strategies. BMI was calculated with height, weight measurement based on WHO Body Mass Index (BMI) Scale and the lifestyle pattern was assessed by Structured Questionnaire on Lifestyle Pattern before and after intervention period in both the groups. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the analysis of data. The results were found that the adolescents who received the intervention package, reduced their weight expressed as BMI (t = 9.18) and improved their lifestyle pattern (t = 22.63) than the control group adolescents. There is an association between BMI and sex (X² =14.97), family monthly income (X² = 14.63) and type of diet (X² = 6.9) and there is also an association between lifestyle pattern and sex (X² = 14.01), number of meals (X² = 6.17) and the presence of stress (X² = 6.98). These results were statistically significant at 0.05 level. The study concludes that the yoga therapy combined with dietary modification and positive coping strategies for stress, when administered to overweight and obese adolescents has beneficial effect on weight reduction and prevention of obesity related diseases. The researcher had recommended for the replication of this study with large samples in different settings to strengthen the findings.
