Abstract

Approximately 80% of patients experience acute pain after surgery so additional efforts are required to improve patients' postoperative pain experience and the cardinal responsibility in nursing is to relieve pain and provide comfort, therefore one of the non pharmacological methods that can be used to relieve pain is cryotherapy. This true experimental Pre-test, Post-test control group design study was to ‘Determine the effectiveness of Cryotherapy on pain management among post operative patients undergoing Orthopedic surgery at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital Chennai-03’. 60 samples were collected by simple random technique method. Pre intervention assessment of pain was done with visual analog pain scale for both experimental and control group with 30 samples in each group. Cryotherapy was applied for 20 minutes thrice a day for 3 consecutive post operative day for the experimental group. Ongoing assessment was done after each application. Post intervention assessment was done for both experimental and control group. In day one the pain score in experimental group was 8.33 before administration of Cryotherapy, on day three the pain score reduced to 0.70 after administration of Cryotherapy. This shows that the effectiveness of cryotherapy on pain management is 76.3% whereas in routine therapy it is only 49.4%. Experimental group benefitted more than control group (76.4 – 49.4= 26.9%). This is the net effect of this study. This study has revealed the need and importance for nurses working in the post operative Orthopedic wards, to assess the pain level and provide comfort measures through nursing care by reducing the pain through evidence based practice. Hence the patients were given cryotherapy for reducing pain to reduce pain among post operative orthopedic patients.
