Abstract

Aamakazhichal (Dysentery) is a pandemic disease affecting mainly the large intestine and very common in children as per the Siddha and Modern Systems of Medicine. To treat children with Aamakazhichal, a Siddha Trial Drug; Oma choornam has been prepared. The collection, confirmation and purification of all ingredients have been described. The method of preparation of Oma choornam has also been described. The biochemical analysis of the Trial Drug shows the presence of aminoacids, unsaturated compounds, calcium, ferrous iron, chloride, tannic acid, and reducing sugar and the results have been tabulated. The pharmacological effects such as antispasmodic, antidiarrhoeal, acute and chronic anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and styptic effects of trial drug have been studied and the results have been tabulated. The antimicrobial action of the Trial Drug on entroinvasive microbes such as, Shigella Dysteriae Staphylococcal sp and Salmonella sps have also been studied and the results have been tabulated. The Trial Drug, Oma choornam has been used to treat 20 inpatients (from July 2011 to October 2011) of children affected by Aamakazhichal. Dehydrated children having lactose intolerance and in need of emergency treatment were excluded for this study. Before treatment, the signs and symptoms for Aamakazhichal are noticed and confirmed by clinical analyses. During treatment, the dose of 100 mg to 500mg of Oma choornam, thrice a day before meals, along with cow’s curd has been given to children affected by Aamakazhichal depending on their age, body weight and severeness of the disease. No side effect has been noticed during treatment with Oma choornam. By analysing and taking into consideration of all these results, it is inferred that the Oma choornam has effective actions in controlling the Aamakazhichal. CONCLUSION: Since Oma choornam has significant antimicrobial effects on intestinal microbes such as Shigella Dysteriae, Salmonella sps and Staphylococcal sp., it has shown very good result in controlling bacillary dysentery. In the present observation, it is also proved that it is an effective treatment for Bacillary dysentery. The Biochemical analysis and the pharmacological effects of Oma choornam reveal that the drug is used to cure dysentery, spasmodic abdominal pain and rectal tenesmus. The drug heals the ulcer caused by the bacilli. It reduces the inflammation and controls the raised body temperature. It arouses the digestion which was weekened during dysentery. The drug maintains the electrolyte balance and the normal intestinal flora. Apart from these, no adverse effects were observed in the Oma choornam treated patients. This drug is a herbal product, easily available, harmless to infants and children and hence it may be recommended for bacillary dysentery. The dose of the drug used in the present study, is proved as adequate to use it as a paediatric drug to treat children with Aamakazhichal by child specialist.
