Abstract

BACKGROUND: In the recent years, there is growing recognition of importance of the link between alcohol use and domestic violence. Victims of domestic violence, especially physical and psychological have been found to be at an increased risk for attempting suicide. Very few studies have been done in South India comprising these wives as a study group. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare the prevalence of domestic violence and suicidal risk among wives of alcohol dependent males and non alcohol users, to explore the association between domestic violence and suicidal risk with severity of alcohol dependence and to check the association between domestic violence and suicidal risk in both groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a cross-sectional study carried out at the Institute of Mental Health, Chennai comprising 60 wives of alcohol dependent males and 60 wives of non-alcohol users. Severity of Alcohol Dependence Questionnaire (SADQ) was used to assess the severity of alcohol dependence in males. Modified conflict tactics scale was used to check for domestic violence and Beck’s Suicidal ideation scale was used to detect any suicidal ideation. Results were tabulated using descriptive and correlational statistics. RESULTS: Domestic violence especially physical, psychological, sexual abuse and suicidal risk was found to be significantly more in wives of alcohol dependent males. Domestic violence increased with severity of alcohol. CONCLUSION: Wives of alcohol dependent males should not be ignored and should be counselled as well as checked for psychopathology, if any at regular intervals. Marital therapy for the couple as well as individual psychotherapy for the wives should be considered.
