Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The assessment of functional remission in schizophrenia is multidimensional. The various domains include symptom remission, cognition, psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Clinical, symptomatic remission and global level of functioning have been taken into account for assessing functional remission. OBJECTIVE: The study is designed to measure the functional remission and to analyse the factors determining functional remission in patients with schizophrenia. To study the relation between socio demographic profile and clinical data with functional remission. METHODS: A sample of 100 consecutive patients attending Outpatient department at Institute of Mental Health, Chennai were selected for the study. Symptomatic remission assessed using PANSS, social functioning using GAF, and clinical outcome using CGI scales. RESULTS: Finding showed 71 patients had achieved symptomatic remission, 64 scored more than 60 score in GAF, and 55 had clinically remitted. 45% patients have achieved functional remission as per our design. The variables which determined functional remission includes i) social support ii) less duration of untreated illness iii) low positive and negative symptom score in PANSS iv) less number of hospital admissions and v) good drug compliance. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that functional remission is an achievable goal for 45 percentage of patients with schizophrenia. New approaches should include multi-dimensional measures to assess functional outcome in research in schizophrenia.
