Abstract
BACKGROUND: In mitral valve diseases associated with long standing pulmonary hypertension,Tricuspid annulus dilates and fails to shorten during systole leading to Tricuspid regurgitation.Tricuspid regurgitation contributes to both the morbidity and mortality of patients undergoing mitral valve replacement. AIM OF THE STUDY: To study the management of tricuspid regurgitation in patients undergoing mitral valve replacement for rheumatic mitral valve diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a prospective study of 250 patients who underwent mitral valve replacement for rheumatic mitral valve diseases over a period of 30 months from august2009-feb2012,in GOVERNMENT GENERAL HOSPITAL,CHENNAI-3. SUMMARY: Tricuspid regurgitation is more common in female patients with long standing mitral valve diseases associated with pulmonary hypertension.Tricuspid valve repair either DEVEGA or RING annuloplasty done concomitantly with mitral valve replacement decreases post operative tricuspid regurgitation and improves outcome. CONCLUSION: This study shows that tricuspid valve repair done concomitantly with mitral valve replacement has significantly decreased the post operative tricuspid regurgitation and improved its outcome.
