Abstract

The new born health challenges faced by India are more formidable than that experienced by any other country in the world. The main aim and goal of newborn care is not only to reduce the mortality rate but more importantly ensure their intact survival. Hence this study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge regarding new born care among primigravid mothers and to assess the effectiveness of the self instructional module. The objectives of the present study includes assessing the pre and post test knowledge of mothers regarding newborn care, comparison of pre and post test score and association of findings with selected demographic variables. The research design used in this study was “Pre experimental design”-one group pre test- post test design”. About 60 samples participated and they were selected by convenient sampling technique. Overall pretest percentage of knowledge score is 49.50% among primigravid women, in pre test the level of knowledge on care of new born baby among primigravid women. In general 53.3% of women are having inadequate knowledge and 46.7% of them are having moderate knowledge and none of them are having adequate knowledge. The Overall post-test percentage of knowledge score is 84.07% among primigravid women. Among them in post test none of the mothers are having inadequate level of knowledge score, 16.7% of them having moderate level of knowledge score and 83.3% of them are having adequate level of knowledge score. Women have improved their knowledge from 14.85 to 25.22 after the administration of Self instructional module. The study also recommended creating awareness on newborn care during antenatal period itself.
