Abstract
BACKGROUND: The management of paediatric femur fracture continues to evolve with time using flexible intramedullary nailing. The objective of this study is to evaluate the functional outcome of paediatric femoral diaphyseal fractures treated with titanium elastic nailing in the age group of 5-11 years. METHODS: This is a prospective study comprising 20 children in the age group between 5-11 years with fracture shaft of femur. Only closed fracture of the diaphyseal region of the femur were included while metaphyseal, comminuted and pathological fractures were excluded. Titanium elastic nail was used for fixation of fractures. RESULTS: The results were evaluated using Flynn et al criteria. Eight out of twenty patients had excellent results, ten patients had satisfactory results and the remaining two patients had poor results. All fractures united with full range of motion at hip and knee without any major complications. Limb length discrepancy occurred in one case which doesn’t affect the gait of the patient. CONCLUSION: Titanium elastic nailing of simple diaphyseal fractures in children in the age group of 5-11 years is an effective method with less complications. It is cost effective and gives excellent outcome in comparison with the conservative management.
