Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Visfatin is an adipokine secreted by a variety of cells in the body with multitude of functions of which its role in inflammation as a pro-inflammatory cytokine has been widely postulated. This study evaluates the level of visfatin levels in healthy individuals, chronic periodontitis patients before and after non-surgical periodontal therapy. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on salivary and serum concentrations of visfatin in chronic periodontitis patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 30 healthy individuals and 30 chronic periodontitis patients aged between 25-65 years and with normal BMI. Periodontitis patients underwent scaling and root planing and were reviewed after 2 months. Periodontal clinical parameters were recorded before and after non - surgical therapy, serum and salivary samples were collected at baseline and at review and stored. Visfatin levels were evaluated by ELISA. RESULTS: Serum and salivary visfatin levels were elevated in chronic periodontitis patients than healthy individuals. NSPT resulted in reduction of serum and salivary visfatin levels in periodontits patients. CONCLUSION: The elevation of serum and salivary visfatin in chronic periodontitis and its subsequent reduction by NSPT makes visfatin as a probable marker and a potential therapeutic target for assessment of treatment efficacy.
